How to make it: Almond milk 0 FN Social Network September 06, 2023
There is a recipe on the site for making almond milk. However some feedback is suggesting that actually seeing what the process looks like might be a more helpful. So here we are!
As per the recipe, the almonds have been soaked overnight and really well rinsed. This removes all the enzymes inhibitors (which stop the nuts from sprouting) as it is understood that this allows humans to gain more nutritional benefit from the nuts.
You can just make out in the corner of the picture, a Vitamix blender that I use for all my blending/liquidising needs. It is incredibly powerful…………… and expensive. If using ‘normal’ blenders then you may need to blend the almonds and water for quite a while to ensure that the nuts are well and truly broken up. Resembling liquefied ground almonds.
I pour the blended nuts and water into a huge ‘jelly straining’ bag as shown. This separates the milk leaving the almond ‘meal’ in the bag. Amazon and https://www.cookingmarvellous.com/jelly-straining-bag.html sell these. Having tried a variety of devices, this is the best, easiest to manage and clean thoroughly. It also produces, really lovely milk, with no bits, whatsoever.
I then decant into a glass airtight bottle; you can see this in the background too!
The meal can be used stirred into porridge, muesli or used in cakes, I guess (not being a cake maker, I’m not sure absolutely sure about that!).
The milk will taste fresh for around 3 – 4 days. You can tell when it is past its best when it becomes bitter.
