Is Lake District Dairy quark really a health food?
If you are dairy free do not read this review……..
Quark is made from cow’s milk and it is technically very soft cheese resembling yoghurt in texture. The process by which it is produced renders it low fat and plain varieties contain only natural sugars present.
Tastes delicious! low saturated fat, high protein content, very versatile, maybe more digestible than other cheeses (anecdotal), good protein to carb ratio available at Tesco and Morrisons
Obviously not for dairy avoiders, packaging is awful, flavoured varieties contain small amounts of maize starch, no working website yet (June 2025)
- Nutritionally it has very good credentials: high protein to carb ratio (almost 4:1) naturally fat free and very low in salt and natural sugar. Half of a 250 g pot will give you less than 100 calories. Unfortunately I can’t find good info on the mineral and vitamin status to date.
- Three flavours: plain, vanilla and lemon. The lemon and vanilla had added sugar and natural flavourings; I could actually see the vanilla seeds!
I am very surprised to say I LOVE this stuff.
In fact if it wasn’t for the addition of the maize starch and glucose syrup (both in very small amounts admittedly but I am being picky) this product would be the first to get an FISN recommended sticker!
They almost sent me some more by accident; I am kicking myself for telling them.
I will be buying all the varieties again. The plain I’ll use as a sauce base without thickening for stirring through steamed veg or curries and adding to smoothies. The flavoured ones will be for snacks and a base for fruit at breakfast.
This is a great alternative to all the other milk products vying for your attention and money. I thoroughly recommend Lake District Dairy quark both as a qualified independent nutrition consultant and a professional health eating blogger.
So in my humble opinion this is a health food. If you are not dairy-free, what are you waiting for?
n.b. Note pics of empty pots….. wasn’t able to wait long enough to photograph full ones…………………..
